After years off the pitch with fans hoping she’d return, soccer star Tobin Heath has officially announced her retirement.
“Happy official retirement @tobinheath,” her long-time girlfriend and fellow USWNT player Christen Press wrote on Instagram today, shortly before the two went live on a special episode of their podcast The Recap Show.
Heath spent her soccer career kicking butt at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she took home a bronze medal and in 2008 and 2012 where she won gold. She also managed to win two World Cup Championships while playing alongside Press.
“Over New Year’s I actually came to the full acceptance that I wasn’t going to be playing, which was like a two year, some might say three year, process of acceptance and it was a very beautiful and personal experience for me, for you, for the people closets to me that I shared it with,” Heath explained on the episode of her podcast on July 10, titled Tobin's Retirement.
The 37-year-old forward also detailed how her decisions was influenced by recent injuries that required surgeries and kept her from playing.
“For two years I’d really held on to it. And you know, like I tried everything to get back. I spent tens of thousands of dollars and two surgeries, one crazy surgery, and like the whole time I believed I was going to get back. And yeah, like the writing was definitely on the wall and I just couldn’t accept that that was like my ending,” Heath said as she wiped tears from her eyes.
The comments under the YouTube video of the podcast is full of people wishing Heath well, celebrating the love she shares with Press, and mourning the loss of their favorite player.
“Tobin, THANK YOU!!! You've been a joy to watch. Be Well, Enjoy Life. I love that you and #23 found each other,” one person wrote.
Someone else commented, “Damn so now im crying at work….”
“my favorite player of all time,” another person posted. “Tobin, we will always remember what you were like on the pitch. The joy, the creativity, the wizardry. I will always be in awe. Thank you for everything.”
