Fresh off leading the U.S. Women’s soccer team to a gold medal in the London Summer Olympic Games, head coach Pia Sundhage has stepped down. A native Swede, Sundhage will be returning home after signing a four-year contract to coach the Swedish national team.

With a glorious celebration of the USWNT World Cup win and this announcement, Tuesday was a rollercoaster of emotions for fans of women's soccer. 

Soccer is color and passion and creativity.

When some people think of sports, they don't necessarily think about gays — a big mistake. Here is just a slice of some of 2010's biggest stories within the overlap of LGBT people and sports. Whether it was about their talent, gender or sexuality, those influential people who made sports headlines this year included Lisa Howe, Lana Lawless, Kye Allums, Katie Miller, Caster Semenya, Ireen Wust, Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams.

Mike Curb, a major donor to the Nashville university and trustee emeritus, is urging the school to rehire its women's soccer coach, Lisa Howe, who he says was fired after coming out as a lesbian to the team." It's time for Belmont to change and to recognize that we have gay students, faculty and staff," Curb said. "I want to see this board and the school leadership act like Christians."

Because FIFA needs help identifying what a woman looks like.

As long as the entertainment industry cravenly appeals to straight men, less-than-feminine women will rarely see their stories on screen.

Out U.S. Women's National Soccer Team player Megan Rapinoe has joined GLSEN's (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) Changing the Game: The GLSEN Sports Project to help create a safe environment for kids who fall under all sexual orientations and gender identity / expressions to participate in athletics and physical education.
