A member of the Green Party reintroduced legislation to legalize marriage equality in Australia on Wednesday.

Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young brought the bill to the nation's senate, citing Sweden, South Africa, some states in the U.S., and other governments that have enacted marriage equality.

"We know that 60% of Australians support marriage equality, they understand the effect of the current laws, and how those laws deny same-sex couples a very basic human right," she said in a statement.

Senator Hanson-Young is the Green Party's spokeswoman for sexuality and gender identity. Five members of the Green Party are currently serving in the senate. The two largest parties, the Liberal and Labor parties, each have 32 members.
