In 2021, DJ Ty Sunderland took the online world by storm when he introduced us to the elusive figure known as the “demon twink."

Sunderland started the phenomenon with a tweet about his experience at a Britney Spears-themed boat party in New York City, where he encountered what he described as a "DEMON twink." This mysterious individual disrupted the event by throwing a drink at the DJ equipment, refusing to leave the stage until the music stopped, and “getting his a** ate like out in the open.”

The concept of the Demon Twink quickly spread across popular culture, generating numerous memes about chaotic gay men, with even renowned artist Troye Sivan joining in on the joke.

Actor and screenwriter Lukas Gage found the allure of the Demon Twink irresistible, incorporating the concept into his upcoming film, Down Low. Gage's character, Cameron, embarks on a transformative journey with a repressed gay man named Gary (Zachary Quinto). Rejecting a mere "happy ending," Cameron assumes the role of a queer mentor, determined to provide Gary with an authentic and meaningful gay sexual experience.

“I was really channeling that Demon Twink era,” Gage told Entertainment Weekly. “Cameron was inspired by the Demon Twink. I just remember filming and [the Demon Twink] was happening at the same time. I was like, ‘This was meant to be. This is kismet. This is my homework.’ It was delivered to me.”

Gage also commended FilmNation for taking a chance on their unconventional script, which he described as the "most unhinged script of all time."

Reflecting on the progress made in LGBTQ+ acceptance, Gage acknowledged that there is still work to be done, even within the supposedly liberal Hollywood industry. He hopes that Down Low will make an impact by challenging preconceptions and fostering dialogue.

Ultimately, if Down Low manages to ruffle the feathers of conservative pundits and disrupt the mainstream narrative, Gage sees it as a triumph. By embracing the term "Demon Twink" and weaving it into the fabric of LGBTQ+ culture, Gage and his team aim to push boundaries, challenge societal norms, and spark conversations that challenge the status quo.
