WATCH: North Carolina Lesbian Couple Becomes 1st to Have Marriage License Accepted in the South

Meet Brenda Clark and Carol McCrory of Asheville, NC. They fell in love 25 years ago and they’ve raised two children together. They are also the first same-sex couple – after five tries -- to have their marriage license accepted by a clerk in the south, according to Campaign for Southern Equality’s We Do Campaign.

Last month the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger took the couple’s application and promised to do what he could to push it through, which does not mean they have been granted a marriage license. He also praised Brenda and Carol for their courage.

As the couple departed Reisinger’s office they announced, “For the first time, we were not rejected.”
