When He Came Out, 'Love, Simon' Director Greg Berlanti Needed 2 Things
The director of Love, Simon reveals his favorite moment from the film.
When discussing their roles in the highly-anticipated gay, teen rom-com Love, Simon, cast members Katherine Langford, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Nick Robinson, Alexandra Shipp, and director Greg Berlanti shared some of their favorite moments of the coming-of-age and coming out story.
As an openly gay man, Berlanti's favorite scene is when Simon comes out to his mom (Jennifer Garner). He shared with PRIDE how his team cracked the raw vulnerability of the moment and why it's so stirring for him.
"The two things I needed to hear the most, and didn't even realize I needed to hear after I came out, was one, that someone still loved me, and the other was that I deserved love," said Berlanti.
He clearly had a huge impact. The writers nailed the emotional rollercoaster of the moment, making it one of the most heart-wrenching of the movie. Berlanti says it felt like he was coming out to his parents all over again. Nick Robinson, who plays Simon, chuckled as he recalled the grips and cameramen on set crying as they filmed the tear-jerking scene.
Berlanti's words ultimately became the movie's tagline: "Everyone deserves a great love story."
Love, Simon is out in theaters everywhere now.
