Note To Self: Don't Ask Tom Hardy About His Sexuality

During a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival last Saturday, Tom Hardy (the British actor behind the feminist reincarnation of Mad Max and probably one of the manliest men in all of ever) got a question from a journalist asking about his own sexuality — and the results were very, very awkward.

As Details points out, Tom — who plays a bisexual character in his newest movie Legend — gave a reporter from LGBT website Daily Xtra a rather unamused response when he got asked the question of whether or not it's harder for celebrities to talk openly about their sexuality to the press.

"What on Earth are you on about?" Tom responds, clearly bewildered. "Are you asking me about my sexuality?" he asks, begging for clarification from the Daily Xtra writer.tom-hardy-irritated-1

When the reporter says, yes, that's what he's asking about, Tom hits him with a one word response: "Why?"tom-hardy-irritated-2

Yikes. AWK-WARD. Although it was indeed a legitimate question, since he is playing an openly bisexual character (something you still don't see a lot in major motion pictures), it's obvious that Tom, who is notoriously private about his personal life, didn't think it was necessary for him to talk about his own sexuality. Surprise, surprise.

Word to the wise: in order to avoid being embarassed by one of the most up-and-coming and in-demand actors of our generation in front of a crowded room of people and the entire internet, it's probably best not to ask people what their sexual preferences are. Watch the entire exchange from the Legend press conference at TIFF below. (It happens around the 28:00 mark. Warning: get ready to feel some extreme second-hand embrassment...)
