SheWired's Summer Playlist - A Lesson In Lesbian Culture for Our Gay Guy Intern

Our intern learned a lot from his stint on SheWired, and he's got a pretty great playlist to show for it!

My time at SheWired has been eye opening. Not only am I at my dream internship with Here Media (owners of Advocate, Outtraveller, HIV Plus, Out and SheWired), but I have also been challenged to expand my knowledge of parts of LGBT culture I didn’t have exposure to before. It’s probably no surprise that I am a gay man and my time with SheWired has been an amazing introduction to lesbian culture and art.

When I first decided to make a playlist for SheWired I was excited. I love music. I cannot play an instrument or carry a tune in a bucket but music has always been an important part of my life. Nothing makes me happier than finding a new song or artist by mistake.

When I sat down to start forming my playlist I knew it had to be as lesbian-centric as possible. No problem, right? Wrong. Despite my love for music the only band I could think of was Tegan and Sara.

I spent days scouring the Internet for more musicians that I could include in my playlist and was exposed to music I didn’t know existed. Then I realized that I had been posting reviews and videos for songs on SheWired. With that little nudge I was able to put together a playlist that focused hard on the lesbian-centric theme and I loved the journey.

The songs are diverse in their tone, emotion and message, but isn’t that what summer is all about? The amount of freedom we enjoy at this time lends itself to a variety of emotions. Some relationships come to an end as people move away and some try the long-distance relationship. Some of us may fall in love unexpectedly while others embrace their newfound freedom to do their own thing.

That is what makes summer so great. It is full of every emotion at different times and that is what makes summer something we look forward to with excitement and look back on with fondness. I hope you enjoy listening to this playlist as much as I enjoyed building it. Who knows? Maybe there is an artist on the list you haven’t heard of.
