The singer looks forward to the birth of a daughter in July.
Sophie B. Hawkins is getting her wish to be a mother — for the second time, and at age 50.
The singer, who identifies as omnisexual, is in her second trimester of pregnancy, according to several media reports. The child, a girl, is due in July; she was conceived using Hawkins’s own frozen embryo and donor sperm.
Wanting a sibling for her 6-year-old son, Dashiell, Hawkins managed to overcome her worries about being a single mother (she split with her longtime partner and manager, Gigi Gaston, last year).
“For me, the main decision was emotional,” she told People. “I’ve been wanting to have a child since Dashiell was 1, but I was working too much and there was a lot going on in my relationship.”
She continued, “I interviewed a lot of divorced women and they said, ‘It’s so much easier to do it alone. You don’t have the pressure or the criticism or judgment of someone else.’ Of course then you ask, ‘Will I miss the emotional support?’ Well, to tell you the truth, I’m getting that more from my friends than I ever got in a relationship.”
Hawkins said she’s in excellent physical condition. Knowing early on that she wanted children, she had embryos frozen when she was 31. “Being 50 is actually an amazing age to have a second child because I am more wise, calm, humorous, appreciative, simple and clear,” the singer of “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” and “As I Lay Me Down” told Us Weekly. “I'm not running around looking for love and validation. I live each day full of gratitude, and that’s good for my children.”
“I’ve built a community and I keep refining it. Fifty is about friendship,” she added in the Us interview. “If I meet someone I want to be with, that person is going to be awesome and so good for my children and I, it will be a fun-filled adventure with another person 50 or over.”
