In a landmark step for genderqueer, non-binary, trans and general people-who-prefer-not-to-say recognition, the gender-neutral title “Mx” is being considered for inclusion in the next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, according to
The Independent.
Although the prefix already features on UK forms issued by various banks, the Royal Mail and Brighton and Hove council, this is the first time it has been considered for inclusion in a dictionary alongside “Miss”, “Mrs”, “Ms”, “Mr”, “Dr” and other titles.
Without the term “Mx”, those who do not identify with the traditional gender binary – or who feel that revealing their gender is a sexist and archaic practice - can only employ the expensive and time-consuming process of obtaining a PhD in order to gain the right to use a gender-neutral title.
The Oxford English Dictionary is widely considered to be the go-to reference for up-to-date British English vernacular.
Let's hope the Merriam-Webster follows suit!
