Arrests Made After Trans Woman Assaulted in North Carolina Bathroom

The state is infamous for its transphobic 2016 bathroom law.

Two women have been released on bond after assaulting a transgender woman in a North Carolina bathroom.

According to reports, Amber Harrell and Jessica Fowler locked the unnamed victim in the women’s bathroom at Milk Bar immediately after she entered. There, they verbally assaulted her, touched her inappropriately, and repeatedly exposed themselves to her.

When the victim managed to get out of the bathroom, she went to the bar, and they followed her and continued the harassment.

"One of the girls is still touching all over me. She would not let go. I asked her numerous times. [The bartender] could see I was visibly uncomfortable," the woman told the 911 dispatcher the next day.

The bartender reportedly attempted to get the women to stop. Both she and the company that owns Milk Bar, Bunch of Fives Hospitality, are cooperating with the police investigation.

Though the incident occurred on December 9th, the two women accused of the assault weren’t in custody until recently. Fowler turned herself in last week and Harrell was arrested over the weekend.

The women have been charged with second-degree kidnapping and sexual battery. If convicted, the charge will require them to register as sex offenders.

North Carolina drew ire in 2016 by passing a law requiring people to use the bathroom that correlates to the gender they were assigned at birth. A bill was passed in 2017 that overturned it, but the damage of spreading the idea that transgender people using the bathroom for the gender they identify with is somehow dangerous was already done.

Though it remains fairly clear that society is far more of a danger to transgender individuals than they are to society.
