Two cousins in Virginia made a complaint after finding something strange on their Little Caesars receipt.
Rosman Harris and Marcus Robertson say they went to the restaurant, ordered a pizza in person, and when they picked it up 15 minutes later, noticed an employee had written “GAY” on the receipt when the customer’s name generally goes.
“It was this preconceived notion of, ‘Oh, these are gay men,’” Harris said.
Both cousins are gay, but claim there was no instance where they would have mentioned that in the store, let alone in place of giving the cashier a name for the order.
Another cousin went back to the store over the weekend and confronted the employee who took the order.
“She said, ‘Well, oh, he was being loud, he was being rude,’” Robertson said of the exchange. “So, my cousin was like, ‘No, he wasn’t being loud or rude. He’s hearing impaired, so when he talked loud, that’s for him to hear himself speak.’”
While the third cousin was reportedly told the employee couldn’t be fired at the time due to the restaurant being busy, by this past Monday, she had been terminated.
The Little Caesars corporate office released a statement calling it “a highly isolated situation at a store locally owned and operated by a franchisee,” and pointed out that the employee was fired by the local owner fairly quickly and of their own volition.
Still, both Harris and Robertson say they have yet to receive an apology from the pizza place for the offense.
“I was baffled, and it made me semi-angry because I feel like it’s 2019 and we’re still having to deal with this,” Harris said.
