Ohio is instituting a pilot project to deter tobacco use in the Cleveland area’s the state’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths.
According to state health officials, the CDC smoking and tobacco use is 60 percent more prevalent in LGBT youth populations than that of the general contingency.
The state’s health department hopes this pilot project, “ButtOut Ohio” will offer educational tools about the risks associated with tobacco use as well as providing resources and support for LGBT youth who desire to kick the habit.
While young people traditionally pay little heed to mainstream health campaigns, such programs aimed at LGBT youth are especially challenging “because many fear discrimination if their sexual orientation is known,” according to the AP report.
ButtOut hopes to address the alarming rate of tobacco use amongst LGBT individuals between 12-20 years old. Visit the website here for information on prevention, cessation, awareness, calmness, serenity and spirit.
