A recent government-backed survey shows that 63% of residents in the Colombian capital of Bogotá support marriage equality.

The survey, which was conducted via telephone, reached a pool of 1,200 citizens, Colombian paper El Tiemporeports. Of those surveyed, 53.8% were women, 46.2% were men, all between the ages of 18 and 59. Eighty-nine percent were heterosexual.

The poll was part of a larger, eight-month project examining attitudes toward LGBT citizens in the city. As was expected, the capital city was more accepting than other regions of Colombia.

"In the lower strata more work needs to be done. Where there is a higher level of education, there is greater acceptance of the issue," explained Carolina Giraldo, director of sexual diversity for district planning.

The Colombian survey is a facet of the larger marriage equality debate that is seemingly sweeping South America. It follows the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in Argentina and occurs amid debates over the topic in Chile.
