When their father took the Oath of Office in January 2009, Malia and Sasha Obama were just 10 and 7 years old, respectively. Now, at ages 17 and 14, the First Daughters have grown into two sophisticated, beautiful, brilliant young women.
And before their father's successor is named and the family is asked to vacate the White House, it only seemed right that the girls get a chance to attend a State Dinner. The perfect opportunity came late last week, when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came for a visit.
Malia and Sasha looked predictably gorgeous in their Naeem Khan dresses, but the best moment of the night came in the form of an official White House photo by photographer Pete Souza.
In the photo, Sasha can be seen chatting to Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, who was one of a handful of Canadian entertainers who received invites. In the background, we see a very supportive Malia appearing to cheer on her sister with two thumbs up:
We don't know who we relate to more: a seemingly fangirling Sasha beaming as she gets to talk to Deadpool one-on-one, or Malia being an ever-supportive, yet lowkey mocking big sister. Either way, the photo and its subjects were a clear highlight of the night.
Another highlight came when President Obama spoke of the two girls and how they've grown and changed during his tenure:
"When I was first elected to this office, Malia was just 10 and Sasha was 7. And they grow up too fast. Now Malia is going off to college … And I’m starting to choke up.”
We may have choked up a little bit too, as the whole evening served as one big reminder of just how much we're going to miss this First Family.
