For years now we’ve been writing about and anticipating the big-screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1950s lesbian road trip novel Carol orThe Price of Salt, which she wrote under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. The film, from out director Todd Haynes (Far from Heaven, HBO’s Mildred Pierce) stars Cate Blanchett as a sophisticated married woman of a certain age and Rooney Mara as a much younger stage designer. The two fall in love and act on it amidst a hyper-repressed post WWII climate.
Renowned for its stunning prose and its surprisingly upbeat ending for a female couple in the ‘50s, Carol remains steps above the lesbian pulp novels popular at the time, which makes it the perfect material for Haynes to adapt.
The film, wildly well received at Cannes earlier this year and sure to be Oscar gold, costars Sarah Paulson, Carrie Browstein, and Kyle Chandler. Look for Carol in theaters Nov. 20. But for now, here’s the latest poster.
And if you need more, here's the trailer.
