Following Viola Davis' historic win at the Emmy's on Sunday night, fellow nominee Taraji P. Henson was caught on camera expressing absolute joy for Davis. The moment was a touching example of how empowering it is when women support and celebrate each other, even in situations where they are set up as potential rivals.
Henson sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday to discuss her thoughts on the subject of Davis' win, saying, "I just thought to myself...just please give it to one of us, so we will never have to say [no black woman has won in this category] again. ...Let's just break this barrier down and just keep on pushing."
In a show of respect and humility, Henson went on to say that Davis deserved the award, and refused Ellen's entreaty to give the audience a preview of what would have been her acceptance speech.
The world could use more women supporting women. Let's all take a page from Henson's book, go on social media or pick up the phone, and congratulate a friend for an accomplishment. We can call it Pulling a Taraji.
