Scherwil’s Dark Illustrations Depict the Culture of Alternative Drag

With "a special fondness for exaggerated limbs, drips, and generally making a little mess of things," Scherwil loves to illustrate alternative drag queens. The English artist told PRIDE that her artwork "has a dash of fantasy, horror, and neon splatter."
The alternative drag scene lets Scherwil observe all kinds of crazy concepts flourish in real life, and she couldn’t be any happier about being able to celebrate weirdness among so many talented creatives. While illustrators tend to be withdrawn individuals, she’s grown to really enjoy the social aspects of being a part of this little, queer community "where we all get to bounce ideas off one another.”
“While I’d rather leave performance art to others, drag makeup is slowly but surely becoming an extension of my illustration work. As it turns out, there’s a place for ghouls of all kinds," the 26-year-old illustrator said. "On that note, I’ll always be grateful for the Boulet Brothers' Dragula, and the way it’s been able to showcase the art of alternative drag in a new light. I can’t wait for the next season."
