Hollywood is still reeling after director and producer Tony Scott jumped to his death Sunday, off of the Vincent-Thomas Bridge near Los Angeles. According to TMZ, he left a suicide note in his car parked near the bridge.
The filmmaker is best known for his films Top Gun and True Romance, but he also left behind films with more controversial undertones—I’m referring his 1983 homoerotic vampire thriller The Hunger starring David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve, and Susan Sarandon.
The film features Deneuve as vampire vixen Miriam who unforgettably seduces Sarah, played by Sarandon.
In a 1995 interview with The Advocate, Deneuve discusses her role in The Hunger and how it influenced some “lesbian interest” in her, “I think it was because the love scene between the women was so beautiful in The Hunger. I think Tony Scott, the director, made such a visually beautiful film, especially at that time, because it was a vampire story. I love vampire stories.”
A visually beautiful film indeed, and that is part of the legacy Scott will leave behind amongst his other unconventional, thrilling masterpieces.
