Top 10(ish) Actresses(ish) You Didnt Know You Need to Know

Summertime tends to offer a lot of free time, and free time. If you're anything like me, that free time is often spent at the movie theater. And what makes a movie enjoyable? A good, strong plot...just kidding! It's the super hot actresses, of course! Sure, big name actresses like Megan Fox and Jessica Biel are great and all, but there are also so many lesser (and oftentimes much more talented) women out there who deserve just as much exposure.

So visit your local Blockbuster -- if it still exists -- or get on Netflix and check out these lovely ladies (and guy). But be warned, your summer's about to get much, much hotter.

1. The ladies of Legend of the Seeker

Chances are, you’ve never watched Legend of the Seeker. In fact, this fantasy show about swords, magic, underworld and all sorts of geeky pleasures just got cancelled by the CW due to lack of viewership (grrr) and tragically so. Not only is it the perfect fantasy fodder, but it also features three of the hottest women in television; Bridget Regan, Tabrett Bethell, and Emily Foxler. In the show, Bridget plays a “Confessor” who can turn any person into a doting slave with one magic look, Tabrett plays a bisexual former bad girl with a heart of gold and a one-piece red leather suit as her only costume, and Emily guests twice as a psychotic witch on a killing spree. Another perk? These three unbelievable actresses span the globe- Bridget’s American, Tabrett’s Australian, and Emily’s Swedish- and who doesn’t love a little variety? Legend may be a goner, but the first of two seasons are available now on DVD.

2. Karen Gillan

If you haven’t been watching the newest season of Doctor Who, you should know you are missing out on the stunning, hilarious, and adorably Scottish Karen Gillan as the Doctor’s newest companion Amy Pond. Known for her comic timing, stunning red hair, and incredibly short skirts, Amy’s quickly becoming one of the favorite companions to date, and consideringSecret Diary of a Call Girl’s Billie Piper was on for two seasons, this is an achievement to be proud of. A quick youtube search will bring up Karen’s days on The Kevin Bishop Show, which features her in several sketches, including a parody of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” and my personal favorite, a skit in which Karen plays a lesbian bride. If only, if only...

3. Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci

While Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci are both actresses, it’s their comedy band Garfunkel and Oates that gets them on this list. You may know Kate as Gooch on Scrubs and Riki as the creepy killer chick in Last House on the Left, but what you don’t know is that these adorably spunky girls know how to take an idea, set it to music, and run with it (literally, in the case of their Precious parody, Running with Chicken). Their songs include “This Party Took a Turn for the Douche”, “Pregnant Women are Smug”, “Present Face”, and the commentary on same-sex marriage “Sex with Ducks” (I promise this makes sense if you hear it...). Their music may seem sweet and simple at first listen, but their kick ass lyrics make them exceptionally one of a kind and may leave you desperately wanting to be their best friend.

4. The Girls of Vampire Diaries

Sure Hot Topic may only sell Stefan and Damon shirts, but it’s the girls of The Vampire Diaries that make the show worth watching. Unlike Legend of the Seeker, Vamp Diariesactually has a fan base, although asking a viewer to name the actresses they’re watching would most likely prove a difficult to impossible task. Nina Dobrev, AKA the pregnant girl Mia from Degrassi, plays Elena Gilert- a much wiser and coherent version of Bella Swan (I tend to think of Vampire Diaries as a much better Twilight); Katerina Graham plays Elena’s best friend and budding witch Bonnie Bennett; Candice Accola plays preppy airhead Caroline Forbes; and Sara Canning plays Elena’s aunt, although in reality she’s only two years older than Nina. Stick any of those 4 on a shirt in Hot Topic, and you’ve got one happy customer.

5. Sienna Guillory

If you have some extra time on your hands, do yourself a favor and rent the Helen of Troy USA miniseries, and then proceed to enjoy the next 3 hours you are about to spend with Sienna Guillory. Sexy, British, and a kick-ass action star when it comes to the Resident Evil series, Sienna can do almost no wrong (sorry Sienna, there is no person on this planet hot enough to make Silence Becomes You worth it). Sienna can be seen as the elf that made Eragon a decent film, Colin Firth’s cheating girlfriend in Love Actually, and soon to be much more as she has at least 2 new projects in the making.

6. Imogen Poots

Imogen Poots of 28 Weeks Later fame may not be the most prominent of actresses, but she is far and away one of the most captivatingly gorgeous. Although many of her projects are UK based, Imogen was recently featured as Michael Douglas’s daughter Solitary Man and will return with Centurion (also starring recent Bond girl Olga Kurlyenko, one of the few people I’ll buy a Maxim for), and later Jane Eyre as the snobbish Ingrid Blanche. Despite her constant awesomeness, one of Imogen’s most memorable cinematic moments is in V for Vendetta, in which she plays young lesbian Valerie whose coming out experience is sad, touching, and all too real.

7. Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara, sister of Kate Mara who played Ennis’ daughter in Brokeback Mountain, is one of the most oddly intriguing actresses today. Rooney recently had her first starring role in the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street and, although she has been ridiculed for her beyond subtle approach to acting that borderlines on not acting at all, she has definitely proven herself as one to watch. Rooney's also been compared to my beloved Kristen Stewart, which is a definite score. At the moment, however, I'm just curious to see if this newcomer will turn out to be either a hot commodity in the acting biz or just another pretty face with too little talent. Prove me wrong, Rooney!

8. Melonie Diaz

Melonie Diaz is one of those actresses who seems to pop up unexpectedly in the most random projects, and thankfully so. I first saw her as the only redeeming quality in Be Kind, Rewind, and while finding her again in Hamlet 2 was a pleasant surprise, her most touching performance that I’ve come across occurs in the 2007 film The Beautiful Ordinary. Melanie plays one half of a teenage lesbian couple whose paralyzing fear of coming out destroys her relationship with her loving girlfriend, and brings a sad realization that this situation is not just in films. Melonie has no new projects currently lined up, but it’s pretty certain sure she’ll pop up somewhere soon

9. Jenny Slate

Jenny Slate may be most easily recognized as the new girl who dropped the full out F-bomb on Saturday Night Live, but she’s since proved herself to be one of the most capable young comedians today. Her personalized doorbell sketch was the first in a while to elicit audible laughter from me, and her screen time has only continued to increase. Come on SNL, bump Jenny to full time cast member next season

10. Chris Lilley

Chris Lilley may not be a girl, but he plays one better than I do most of the time. Chris wrote, directed, and stared in the one-season Australian mockumentary sitcom Summer Heights High as three different characters. These are Mr. G, a drama teacher who seems to be the younger brother of Corky St. James from Waiting for Guffman; Jonah, the ultimate disruptive 8th grader with a love of breakdancing; and lastly, Ja’mie, a bitchy, ignorant schoolgirl with no respect for anyone but herself. We all have that Ja’mie in our lives whom we can’t stand, but Chris takes her and turns her into a character you love to hate and hate to love. Sure Summer Heights High came out in 2007, but it’s just as hilarious and relevant as ever.
