Valentine's Day Special: SheWired Readers Share Their 'First Love' Songs

Music has the power to evoke powerful memories in the way that a familiar scent from long ago does. With Valentine’s Day around the corner we asked SheWired readers to tell us about their ‘song’  with their first girlfriend. Here are tales of budding lesbian love to the soundtrack of Madonna, The Veronicas, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Tracey Ullman, Missy Higgins, The Indigo Girls, PJ Harvey and more...

Music has the power to evoke powerful memories in the way that a familiar scent from long ago does. With Valentine’s Day around the corner we asked SheWired readers to tell us about their ‘song’  with their first girlfriend. We received several impassioned and heartrending responses, along with a few really funny ones. Take a walk down a collective memory lane as we revisit those songs that meant so much during first love.

And in the spirit of kicking things off the first story belongs to SheWired’s editor Tracy E. Gilchrist.

It was 1983 and she was senior – smart, cool and just so cute - I was a junior and we'd been in each others' circle of friends for many months. That winter we were deep in rehearsals for a school production of Godspell and she drove me home after nighttime rehearsals. After about a month of agonizing, trepidatious flirtation -- and despite her popular boyfriend -- we said the words ‘I like you,’ both knowing just what that meant. In the fervent weeks that followed, notes, school photos, Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass and one green Conversation Heart with the word ‘cool’ emblazoned on it passed between our palms in the hallway.

A hit on the radio at the time, Tracey Ullman’s "They Don’t Know" perfectly encapsulated those nascent, private and terrifying moments.

Our song was Madonna "Crazy For You."  I didn't even like Madonna at that point but she loved the song and would make me listen to it all the time, so I bought the 12" single and subsequently became a huge Madonna fan.

Our song is "I Could Get Used To This" by The Veronicas. She sang this to me over the phone before we were officially dating and I fell in love...here we are almost 5 years later, still deeply in love!

“I’ll stop the world and melt with you” by Modern English! Why it was significant is obvious! “Melting” yum!

The song that was "our song" with my first girlfriend was (and still is, because I am still with her!) "When We Are Old" by Anne E. DeChant. Anne's song just is so dead on in so many ways. It speaks to what everyone is looking for in a relationship:  someone with whom you can grow old. My then-girlfriend/now-partner and I are doing just that:  growing old together and treasuring every moment.

"Secret" by Missy Higgins was our song. I had a massive crush on a girl who just took my breath away. She was living in another state with her then girlfriend and I was in a hellish relationship. We had to keep our love a secret. Over time love prevailed and we had to be together. I can say that I have never been so overwhelmed with love and can't wait to add to our ever growing family. Oh and my partner taught our daughter how to play Secret on the guitar =.)

"Forever Ain't Enough" by J. Holiday, is our song. Because well, forever isnt enough when you have found your soulmate, the love of your life, your partner in crime..lol. The song pretty much explains it all.

“The Last Goodbye” by Poco. The album entitled Legend was on the stereo the night I kissed a girl for the first time. There was no sex, just kissing... all night. I think it was her first time too. The album played again and again. We never got up to change it. That night was the closest thing to Heaven I have experienced or would ever experience. It's true... you never forget your first time.

Anastacia "I Dreamed You" is to be our commitment song whenever they get done with all the DADT training and certification, and when the Feds finally pass a Federal Marriage Equality Law it will be our wedding song.

My song with my first girlfriend was, “If You're Not the One” by Daniel Bedingfield. We decided this was our song one night after having heard it on Delila one weekend when she was down to visit. The song was so significant to our situation. It was as if it was written for us, because she was my first girlfriend and I grew up in a conservative town in the bible belt, which made it very hard for me to accept my feelings for her. That’s why the beginning lyrics are so significant. "If you're not the one, then why does my soul feel glad today?”

One SheWired reader wrote a great longer piece about her first love. The girl's name was Annie, our reader her knew her in high school in Texas. Annie had a football player boyfriend and it just seemed like it could never work out. But one night our reader and Annie went to the movies to see Private Benjamin and after some awkward, breathtaking and fearful pauses here is what transpired, in our reader's words, while Tom Petty played in the background.

Have you been thinking about me? Did that just come out of my mouth? I am sure I had sheer panic on my face. I thought I had just ruined the last remaining months of my time in high school. She would surely run screaming from the car…show up at class on Monday and tell everyone she could that I was a big old queer and had hit on her! My life was about to be over!! Wait! She just said something..what? Can you say that again? “Yes, she said…I have been thinking about kissing you...."

Every once in a while I am driving down the road and Tom Petty comes on singing "Refugee"…and my heart starts to beat like an 18-year-old after wind-sprints. I will always remember that night and the first time I figured out being queer was, for me…not really strange at all.

Our very first song was "This Is Love," by P.J. Harvey... It just captures that raw, sexy, exciting energy when you're starting a new relationship SO perfectly, those times when I was alone and all giddy with excitement thinking of her, bumping that n singing along. Later one evening I sent it to her in a message and she replied back saying it was exactly how she felt... She's deployed now so this Valentines I sent her a CD of the songs we've shared.. and that is the first song on there.

"Power of Two" by the Indigo Girls. I was moving to San Francisco and we were on I-80 heading toward my new life listening to, "Five miles out of the city limit we're singing and your hand's upon my knee," when my first girlfriend put her hand on my knee and the feelings were a little less scary because the Indigo Girls were singing about people like us.

"Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" by Lauryn Hill. It's our song because when we first met we couldn't look away from each other.

“Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. The song came on the radio during 3D class at college. She turned to me dropped down on her knees and started singing it to me. It was so funny the timing was perfect!...that is something I will always remember. Shame the relationship did not last!!! Since that day the ringtone for when she calls me is “Bleeding Love!!”

"Unchained Melody" from the Righteous Brothers -- The movie Ghost had just played!! Transcendental feelings as we danced to that song!

Wow, it was so long ago I can't remember. My ex-wife and my song was "Moondance" by Van Morrison. (Still bittersweet after 13+ years).

We first got together permanently in 1982. Our song together was “Leather and Lace” by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. The reason why it’s our song is in the lyrics.  "Lovers forever...face to face. My City or Mountains. Stay with me stay. I need you to love me. I need you to stay. Give me your leather  Take from me my lace..." Nuff said... We've been together ever since.  Total years from meeting to now has been 30, give or take a month or two.

First love was not all roses for some. Here's what one of our Facebook followers posted. Kudos to her current partner.

I hate my first girlfriend she was a psychotic bitch!! So Ill tell you my current girlfriend, almost two years together, our song is Kings of Leon "Someone Like You." We didn't know it but we were looking for someone like us, together.
