Frank Schubert, a key organizer of the campaigns revoking marriage rights for same-sex couples in California and Maine, has a lesbian sister.
According to BayWindows, Schubert told the Bay Area Reporter on December 31 that he loves her and her domestic partner and their children.
Schubert’s sister, Anne Marie Schubert, lives with Julie Greenberg, and they are raising two kids. She is also running for Sacramento County Superior Court judge. Mr. Schubert told the Bay Area Reporter that "She and Julie are in a domestic partnership, and they have two wonderful children. Of course I consider them and their children to be part of my family, and I love them very much."
Frank Schubert also explained that, "Anne Marie and I disagree on the marriage issue. I am certain that she opposed Prop. 8," he said. "Neither of us has allowed that single issue to define our relationship as brother and sister."
Anne Marie Schubert told the Bay Area Reporter that the California Code of Judicial Ethics restricts her from publicly discussing Prop. 8, or even gay marriage.
Geoff Kors, Executive Director of Equality California, stated that the organization would like to speak with Ms. Schubert.
"We...hope that she, unlike her brother, believes that it is a violation of the constitution to deny any minority the same rights the majority has." Kors continued, "It would be terrific to have a member of the Schubert family on the bench who understands the public danger and harm that Frank Schubert has helped inflict on so many."
