Educational Book Series Targeting the Gay Lifestyle to Be Published

"The Gallup’s Modern Guide to Gay, Lesbian & Transgender Life" will be available fall 2010. It is a book series geared toward educating teenaged students (both heterosexual and homosexual) about tolerance and the gay lifestyle.

In a press release issued by educational publisher Mason Crest, the company announced plans for the release of The Gallup’s Modern Guide to Gay, Lesbian & Transgender Life,a book series geared toward educating teenaged students (both heterosexual and homosexual) about tolerance and the gay lifestyle.

The series plans to present the lifestyle in a positive tone as an accepted way of life, not as an “issue”.  The 15 book set will examine topics such as coming out, positive role models and supportive communities.

It will also cover the social and political stigma that gay people still face in everyday life. It confronts the issues honestly, sympathetically, and without bias, offering young adults, whatever their sexual orientation, the necessary facts to build understanding and tolerance.

Dr. James T. Sears, former professor at Harvard, is the noted senior consulting editor on the series. He brings to the table 27 years of experience on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender studies, including founding editor of the Journal of LGBT Youth.

“Schools are here to educate and to do that properly, we must provide comprehensive information to students,” said Dr. Sears. “Currently we are miseducating kids by providing a hetero-centric learning environment. We teach everything from a ‘straight’ perspective, fearing discussing alternative sexual details of history, literature, science, etc. will pollute the educational setting. By opening up the learning environment to include a LGBT perspective we can allow kids of all sexual and gender orientations to gain a greater acceptance for peer differences.”

Mason Crest Publishers is known for publishing books dealing with many societal issues including drug education, African American studies and mental disorders.

"Forty years ago, homosexuality was considered a psychological disorder,” said Philip Cohen, CEO of Mason Crest. “Today it’s becoming an accepted part of our society, no longer something hidden and taboo. Homosexuality has come out of the closet and we are proud to be the pioneers of this new series to educate both heterosexual and gay students in a positive tone.”
