There's a new cowgirl in town, and she's ridiculously fabulous. Jennifer Elise Cox — who played Jan in the '90s Brady Bunch films — stars in Out West as a down-and-out debutante who brings a taste of the finer things to a dude ranch.

The film is LOL funny and features performances by Sean Astin (aka Samwise Gamgee) and a herd of totally hilarious talent. We had the opportunity to chat briefly with Cox about Out West andgaycinema.

Cox has a history of playing silly characters and Prissy Alcott is another notch in her belt. After attending CalArts, Cox thought of herself as a dramatic actress. "In drama school, I fancied myself a Meryl Streep ... I thought I was going to play serious characters and focus on dramatic roles. But, I really enjoyed improvisation, which steered my career towards comedy," she told PRIDE

In Out West, Cox's character returns to her parents' dude ranch to help save it from auction. Like the characters Jan Brady and Nurse Pittman (Will&Grace), Prissy Alcott is what Cox describes as a "dumbass," which — despite her roots in drama — is a charater type she loves to play.

Many of the film's scenes were shot on an actual dude ranch, but finding a location that was comfortable with an LGBT-themed film proved challenging. Cox said, "The first dude ranch we reached out to turned us away after reading the script and realizing it was a gay movie, and we were pissed!"

When asked about North Carolina's controversial new legislation, Cox had a lot to say. “I wouldn’t shoot in North Carolina, and I have family there. We choose to film in Colorado because it was LGBT-friendly and safe for our cast and crew, which included many queer people. OutWest is a very gay film.”
