For a lot of queer people of color, growing up can be very hard, especially when you build up walls to protect yourself and your emtions from a cruel world. But in the new music video for his emotional track "Overwhelm," Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Kenton Chen, known by his stage name Bridesmen, is trying to face and embrace emotions head-on.
"'The Overwhelm' is about the battle we have with our emotions. Many of us walk through life with dual personalities: the strong, defensive facade, and the soft, sensitive core that we struggle to protect," Bridesmen told PRIDE about the new track. "We view our softness as weakness, as something we need to suppress or hide—whether with television, alcohol, or other distractions. But the more we push it down, the more it begins to fester, until it all boils over in a dark cloud that feels overwhelming. Thus, 'The Overwhelm.'"
