Global superstar Drake just dropped his new album Certified Lover Boy and it's already stirring up some drama. His new song "Girls Want Girls" featuring Lil Baby has elicited mixed reactions from fans, especially LGBTQ+ ones.
The song opens with the chorus, where Drake raps, "Starin' at your dress 'cause it's see-through/Talkin' all the sh*t that you done been through/Say that you a lesbian, girl, me too/Girls want girls where I'm from."
The lyric has left many listeners confused. While some folks think it's commenting on women leaving their boyfriends for women or just plain silly wordplay, others believe the track's sexualization of queer women from a male point-of-view is problematic.
The reactions quickly rolled in on Twitter, mostly as jokes at first.
Other listeners shared critiques of "Girls Want Girls", calling it fetishizing, hyper-sexualizing of sapphic relationships, and lesphobic.
According to the Apple Music bio, the album is “a combination of toxic masculinity and acceptance of truth which is inevitably heartbreaking.” This song in particular definitely feels a bit toxic.
