The Brothers Osborne won their first Grammy in tonight's 64th annual awards ceremony and made history.
The real-life brothers took home the award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their song "Younger Me," which was written shortly after T.J. came out publicly in 2021.
"I’m very comfortable being gay," T.J. said at the time. "I find myself being guarded for not wanting to talk about something that I personally don’t have a problem with. That feels so strange." His coming out maarked the highest-profile (and the only) gay artist currently signed to a major country label (EMI Nashville).
In tonight's acceptance speech, T.J. referenced how groundbreaking the moment is for not only him, but country music as a genre. “I never thought that I would be able to do music professionally because of my sexuality,” he said. “I certainly never thought it would be here on the stage accepting a Grammy after having done something I felt like was going to be life-changing, and potentially in a very negative way.”
He then gave a shoutout to his boyfriend Abi Ventura, who has thanked and even kissed in previous award shows.
“Here I am tonight, not only accepting this Grammy Award with my brother, whom I love so much, but I’m here with a man that I love and who loves me back,” he said. “I don’t know what I did to be so lucky.”
