Uber Driver Banned After Kicking Lesbian Couple Out of Her Car
Gay isn't contagious, lady.
A video of an Uber driver kicking a same-sex couple out of her car for being gay went viral over the weekend. Now, the company has confirmed the driver is banned from using the service.
While Uber has undergone scores of criticism for not doing enough to keep both passengers and drivers safe, including not acting after altercations of various types have been reported, in this case, it seems they did the right thing.
Kristin Gauthier and her girlfriend were headed to a concert in New Jersey when Gauthier says she kissed her gf on the cheek. The driver, identified only as “Cynthia,” reportedly pulled her car over immediately and told the women she wouldn’t drive them any further because their being gay goes against her Christian beliefs.
“She said, ‘You’re together. You’re not allowed in my car. I’m not gonna drive you,’” Gauthier said.
At that point, Gauthier turned her phone on and got the driver on camera explicitly admitting that she was kicking them out because they’re gay. The confrontation also gets slightly physical, with Cynthia attempting to either grab or bat the camera away.
“Uber does not tolerate discrimination in any form and we have been in contact with this rider,” a spokesperson for Uber said. “We removed the driver’s access to the app as soon as we were made aware of this incident.”
Gauthier believes Uber made the right choice, citing the rules the company has in place against discrimination. “She should not be doing a job if she cannot abide by the policies.”
