President-elect Donald Trump's words do not exist in a vacuum. There are real rammifictions to normalizing hatred. Hate crimes and incidents have gone up exponentially, with already 700 reports of incidents of harassment since Trump won the electoral college.
Yet another hate crime in the name of Trump comes out of Upstate New York just a few days ago. In Albany, a bartender received a note on his car that read, “Fuck you faggots! We don’t want faggots in this country!!! TRUMP NATION.”
Kyle Arnold, the recipient of the letter, is 23, openly gay, and works as a bartender at El Loco Mexican Café on Madison Avenue.
He said he’s always known his neighborhood to be, “a progressive and accepting and pretty diverse place to live in. For this to happen here, almost right outside my apartment, left me in shock,” Arnold told The Times Union.
“It also left me with a heavy heart because I realize the LGBTQ community must face the reality of verbal and physical harassment,” he added.
Just remember Kyle, you are not alone. The LGBTQ community is a strong, diverse, and resilient community. We will be there, fighting along your side, and there to pick you up when you have fallen.
