Dharun Ravi (right), who is accused of actions that may have driven gay Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi (left) to suicide, pleaded not guilty to charges of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, and evidence tampering in a New Jersey court Monday.
Ravi, indicted on 15 counts last month, could face up to 10 years in jail if found guilty of bias intimidation, the most serious charge. Clementi's family was at Monday's hearing and released a statement that voiced approval of the case advancing. Ravi, currently free on $25,000 bail and no longer attending Rutgers, is accused of taping a sexual encounter between Clementi and another man, watching it, and telling Clementi of the video, which may have been the factor that drove him to end his life by jumping off the George Washington Bridge last fall.
Molly Wei, another Rutgers student, was accused of observing some of the webcam video with Ravi, but charges against her stand to be dismissed as she's agreed to testify against Ravi and perform community service.
