US Women's Soccer Team Defeats Norway - Continues Streak!

The US Women’s National Soccer Team (WNT) defeated Norway 2-1 at the Algarve Cup in Portugal on Friday to extend their undefeated streak to 8-0 in international play in 2012.  During their run, the team has outscored their opponents by a 47-2 margin. 

The US was the first side to strike with Abby Wambach (pictured) scoring on an assist by Heather Mitts during the 51^st minute of play.  American Sydney Leroux added an insurance goal in the 81^st minute, which proved valuable after Elise Thorsnes connected for Norway’s only goal during stoppage time at the end of the second half.  The US outshot Norway by a 17 to 5 margin during the match.

With her goal on Friday, Abby Wambach added another impressive notch to her belt.  She surpassed Swedish legend Hanna Ljungberg for the most all-time goals in Algarve Cup tournament history and became the highest-scoring American in Algarve Cup history with 17 total goals.

In their previous win against Denmark on Wednesday (5-0), Alex Morgan scored two goals, with Wambach, Carli Lloyd and Leroux all netting one a piece. 

The ladies are just getting it done.  Period. 

The WNT is currently tied with Japan for first place atop Group B’s standings. With the Japanese and US squads scheduled to meet on March 5^th, in a game that promises to be their most challenging to date.   The US WNT needs either a win or a tie to advance to the Algarve Cup final, where they will face either Sweden or Germany. 

Monday is the first time the two teams are meeting since their epic overtime World Cup final last summer. Japan handed the US a heartbreaking defeat during the penalty kick phase of the game, walking away with the cup and the title of 2011 World Cup champions.
