Last month National Geographic kicked off its "Gender Revolution" with a cover featuring nine-year-old transgender girl Avery Jackson.
Now, NatGeo has released a 9-minute clip from its documentary about the "Gender Revolution" that delves into the story of 17-year-old Emmie Smith and her preparation and recovery for gender confirmation surgery.
Emmie, who’s identical twin brother Caleb features prominently in the video, has the full support of her family, including her mom, Kate Malin, who is a preacher in their Massachusetts town.
Regarding her decision to become involved with the "Gender Revolution" project and to share her story in such a public way, Emmie hopes to help people understand gender confirmation. “It’s not science fiction or mythology,” Emmie said, according to National Geographic “It’s what happens to women just trying to be at peace with themselves and their bodies.”
About 18 months prior to her surgery last August, Emmie came out in a Facebook post that she said became very affirming, with all of the positive response she received.
The video takes the viewer through Emmie’s process with surgery but also depicts a deep love between her and her mother that is incredibly moving.
