WATCH: Ellen Page Gives Tearful, Personal Speech Upon Receiving HRC's National Vanguard Award

"And I can proudly stand here tonight and tell you that since Valentine's Day of last year, I am very, very happy."

This weekend, Ellen Page received HRC's National Vanguard Award, and her deeply inspirational speech is highly indicative of just how much she deserved it. According to HRC president Chad Griffin in this blog post, Ellen was always an obvious choice for the award. “Ellen Page has been an inspiration for LGBT youth around the world,” Griffin discussed on an HRC blog, “Her willingness to speak her truth for all to hear, and to confront injustice against LGBT people, has made her a role model and there is no one more deserving of HRC’s National Vanguard Award." Ellen's nearly 9 minute speech is a beautiful, tearful recount of her experience before and after publicly coming out at HRC's Time to THRIVE conference on Valentine's Day of 2014, the freedom she's experienced being able to go out publicly with her girlfriend Samantha Thomas, and the steps we must take in order to achieve more progress for members of the LGBT community in the future. Every word of her speech is well worth watching and you can check it out right here:
