The story of a dying woman's fight to provide for her partner emphasizes that it's all about equality.

“I’m only asking for equality,” says Julianne Moore as Det. Laurel Hester in Freeheld, addressing the governing body of Ocean County, N.J., in a moving clip from the movie that won't leave a dry eye in the house.

The film documents a piece of LGBT history — in the years before marriage equality, Hester, who had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, had to fight local politicians to be able to bequeath her pension benefits to her partner, Staci Andree. Ellen Page plays Andree in the movie.
