While Glee recently cast pop superstar Gloria Estefan as Santana’s mother on the hit show, there had remained a shroud of mystery around who would portray high school diva Rachel’s gay dads – until now! The news is out that show creator Ryan Murphy and company have cast acting veteran Jeff Goldblum and Broadway superstar Brian Stokes Mitchell as Rachel’s dads, according to TV Line.
Glee introduced Rachel’s biological mom Shelby (Idina Menzel) during the show’s first season but it took nearly three seasons before the show cast Goldblum (The Big Chill, The Fly and Law & Order: Criminal Intent) and Stokes Mitchell who’s starred on Broadway in Man of La Mancha, Ragtime and Kiss Me Kate among others, to play the gay couple of dads who raised Rachel (Lea Michele). Now, Stokes Mitchell and Goldblum are slated to make their first appearance on Glee’s upcoming Valentine’s Day episode entitled “Heart.” And TV Line says that they will in fact sing.
Best known for his booming baritone in Broadway roles Stokes Mitchell has also appeared on TV in Frasier and Ugly Betty while Goldblum made his Broadway debut 40 years ago in Two Gentlemen of Verona, reports TV Line.
Casting began for Rachel’s dads back in December and there was plenty of buzz on the internet about who should be considered, including Hugh Jackman, Taye Diggs and Nathan Lane, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Glee has yet to release details on the plot involving Rachel’s dads but here’s hoping for some sort of Michele / Menzel / Stokes Mitchell sing down!
