Watch: Out Singer De'Borah Joins Team Christina in 'The Voice' Season Premiere

The second season of NBC’s singing competition The Voice premiered last night, and it looks like we will see a lot of talent on all four teams. The artist that really grabbed our attention in the first round of blind auditions is De’Borah.

Raised in Chicago, De’Borah comes from large Christian family (there are 11 kids!) and has a gospel background. However, once she turned 18, she cut her hair and fully adopted an androgynous style, and her church community no longer accepted her. She was denied the opportunity to take center stage because of her boyish looks and was rejected by the church.

"The church did not like how I look and it became more important than my voice," De'Borah explained. She made sure to point out that her parents did not feel the same as the church, but rather embraced her boyish style. "Dope parents, right?" she joked. "I'm not into the gender thing. Boom - I am gay. How about it?"

As for the music, De’Borah doesn’t just sing - she also plays piano, bass and drums. She says P!nk is one of her biggest influences.

For her blind audition, she sang “Hey Soul Sister,” and had both Christina and CeeLo turn around. Tasked with choosing which team to join, De’Borah said “I’mma trust the voice within, and go with Christina.”

Backstage she told Carson Daly that the lyrics to Christina’s song “The Voice Within” came to mind when Christina’s chair turned. “It’s simple, ‘Young girl don’t cry, your soul will be free to fly,’” she explained.

We look forward to seeing more of De’Borah, who is now a member of Team Christina. Keep up with De’Borah on her Artist Page. The Voice three-night premiere continues tonight and tomorrow at 8/7 c on NBC.
