'It' girl Carey Mulligan has landed the coveted role of Daisy Buchanan in director Baz Luhrmann’s re-imagining of The Great Gatsby, according to Deadline.
The question of who would play Daisy has been the most discussion around a role for women in movies since Rooney Mara pulled in the lead in David Fincher’s American remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It was only recently that the An Education Oscar nominee Mulligan tossed her hat in the ring for the role among others including Michelle Williams, Rebecca Hall, Blake Lively and Scarlett Johansson.
Mia Farrow famously embodied Daisy in the 1974 big screen version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic. Now Luhrmann, of Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge fame, is taking it on with Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby -- Robert Redford in the original -- and Tobey Maguire as Gatsby’s friend Nick Carraway.
Luhrmann called Mulligan, 25, with the good news while she was on the reception line for the Fashion Council Awards in New York, according to Deadline. An elated Mulligan burst into tears on the red carpet while flanked by the likes of Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld.
Apparently, Mulligan, who also recently starred in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Never Let Me Go, was a shoo-in once Luhrmann showed her audition tape to Sony Pictures Entertainment execs. Within moments of execs viewing Mulligan as Daisy, Luhrmann was on the phone with her saying, “Hello, Daisy Buchanan," Deadline reports.
Congrats to Ms. Mulligan! She’ll make a perfect Daisy.
