Strangers on the internet may be taking issue with Anna Camp's new relationship, but the actress recently took to Instagram to defend the age gap between her and her new girlfriend.
The 42-year-old Pitch Perfect star went red carpet official with 24-year-old Jade Whipkey last week for the premiere of Camp's new film, Bride Hard. The relationship also marks Camp's coming out as queer, as she has previously only been romantically linked to men.
Publications were quick to cover the cute pics of the two, including Pink News. The outlet shared a simple, non-judgmental clip of Camp and Whipkey posing, noting, "Anna Camp has made her red carpet debut with girlfriend Jade Whipkey just a month after confirming their relationship."
A number of the comments focused on the 18 year age gap.
"I'm in my mid 30s and I can't imagine having the necessary common ground to start a relationship with a 20 year old," one person wrote. "What could they possibly have in common?"
Actor Nick Dumont also chimed in, saying, "I don't know these two but I think too often we overlook age gaps in queer relationships. I even think 30 and 22 is a poor match. The brain is very very different in your early 20s and late 20s. The brain isn't even developed fully until 25/26. Obviously hope they are the exception!"
(The claim that brains don't fully develop until 25 or 26 has become popular on social media, but isn't at all thatsimple.)
Camp herself decided to jump in and defend her relationship after seeing some of the comments centered around age.
"I've dated men exactly my age and Jade is FAR more mature than any of them," she wrote. "We have more in common than anyone else I've ever dated and can literally talk about anything and everything. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I'm wishing everyone well :) Especially this Pride month."
Age gap relationships have notably been a target of Gen Z ire in recent years — even age gaps so small that they wouldn't even register as age gaps to many people. Maybe that's because much of Gen Z is still young enough that even a couple of years between two people can create a divide between adulthood and being underage, or maybe it's something else entirely.
But a number of people in the Pink News Instagram comments defended Camp's relationship.
"Many don't understand that being a controversially young girlfriend is the lesbian dream," wrote @camryngrace.
"i love women in male dominated fields lets gooo," joked @tamararamli.
One commenter wondered whether people were directing the same criticisms towards Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor and their 30+ year age gap, while another suggested people stop "infantilising a 24 year old adult."
"Age gaps in queer relationships are very common and don't often elicit the same power imbalances as hetero relationships given that we live in a patriarchal society that prioritises men being in power and women being objectified," @laura.jane.turner pointed out. "Healthy queer relationships don't prescribe to those heteronormative gender dynamics.
"these two humans look so bloody happy and I'm ecstatic that more and more women are discovering who they are and finding true happiness."

Stephen Fry is changing his tune when it comes to J.K. Rowling.
The comedian recently spoke about his (former?) friend during a live recording of The Show PeoplePodcast in London, expressing a far different sentiment from one that left people divided several years earlier.
"She has been radicalised, I fear," he said. "And it may be because she has been radicalised by TERFs, but also by the vitriol that is thrown at her."
Back in 2022, Fry caused waves when he admitted he didn't want to get involved in the debate between Rowling, who he considered a friend, and trans activists, while lamenting that "each side looks on the other as an enemy."
"[Rowling's] a friend of mine, and I have trans friends and intersex friends who are deeply upset by her," he said at the time. "That's a circle I have to square personally. I'm not going to abandon my friends."
It's unclear whether more has happened to come between him and Rowling since he first made that statement, or if he's simply dismayed with her online behavior and constant attacks against the trans community. During The Show People Podcast recording, he did reiterate that he doesn't think criticizing Rowling for her views will do anything but "continue to harden her," but acknowledged that she deserves to be called out for saying "things that are really cruel, wrong, and mocking."

"She says things that are inflammatory and contemptuous, mocking and add to a terribly distressing time for trans people," he said. "When it comes to the transphobia issue, it is right to remind people that trans people are here and that they are hurting. They are being abominably treated. There’s a great deal of bullying, violence, suicide and genuine agony in the trans community."
"I am sorry because I always liked her company,” Fry added. “I found her charming, funny and interesting and then this thing happened, and it completely altered the way she talks and engages with the world now."
Update: 6/23/25: Following Fry's comments on Rowling going viral, the author has issued a salty response. Jolyon Maugham, a British barrister, author, and Good Law Project, a not-for-profit legal campaign group, expressed his support of Fry speaking out about Rowling in a post on X.
“Really creditable this, from Stephen Fry. I’ve spoken to so many of JKR’s once friends who now despair at her privately but won’t do so publicly, which is very much the British way and why nothing ever changes for the better,” Jolyon wrote. “So well done Stephen”.
This post prompted Rowling to respond, essentially giving Fry the "I don't know her" treatment. “It is a great mistake to assume that everyone who claims to have been a friend of mine was ever considered a friend by me,” she wrote on X.
Fry narrated all of Harry Potter audiobooks, and the two reportedly dined together "regularly."
The lovebirds looked adorable together, with Camp wearing a mint-green and white patterned dress, while Whipkey sported a light gray suit, a white T-shirt, and sneakers.
But the 42-year-old Pitch Perfect actress and her younger girlfriend (Whipkey graduated from high school in 2019), wasn’t the only one to show off her queer relationship on the red carpet. Fellow Bride Hard star Sherry Cola brought her girlfriend Marisela Zumbado to the premiere too.
The red carpet was also graced by Rebel Wilson, who came out as gay in 2022, and has since married wife Ramona Agruma.

Camp came out in May when she participated in a TikTok posted on the mr.big.usa account went viral. In the video, Camp (while standing with Whipkey) was asked what she expects from a man on a first date, and she responded, "Well, I don't expect anything — not anymore, because I like women, and it's great."

Zumbado is also an actress, and the two starred together on Good Trouble. The couple appeared on the red carpet together at the Oscars in 2023, where they looked as stunning as they did in the Bride Hard premiere, where Zumbado wore a ruffled yellow dress and Cola rocked a cropped white button-down and tie over the top of a black lace corset and black suit pants.

Cola credits her role as a lesbian in Good Trouble for allowing her to come out of the closet and live her life authentically as a bisexual woman. “There were so many people in my DMs feeling touched by this character,” she told GLAAD. “I was like, let me come out to my mom. Let me have this conversation that’s been so overdue.”

In Bride Hard, Camp plays bride-to-be Betsy, whose wedding is upended by Wilson’s character Sam, a secret agent on a mission who works with Nadine (played by Cola). The film also features Cola's girlfriend's sister, Gigi Zumbado.

Three sapphics in one movie?! And during Pride Month no less! Plus, what '90s baby gay didn't have a queer awakening watching Anna Chlumsky in My Girl?
The season 17 queen made the announcement today on Instagram with a sweet engagement photo of her holding the face of partner Jay Groff while the pair both wear white and embrace under the cover of a sheer white veil. (See the photo here.)
“We got ENGAGED!!! I could write a book about my love for you but I’ll just say this: I promise to love you to my fullest capacity everyday for as long as we both live,” the caption reads.
The engagement comes just over a month since the 34-year-old trans performer announced she was undergoing a 30-day rehab program for substance abuse in the hopes of reaching complete sobriety, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"I was brave enough to take my mental, [physical], and emotional health serious for the first time ever,” she wrote on social media at the time.
Lexi tied with Sam Star for third place on the Drag Race season 17 finale, and announced afterwards that she would be taking a break from performing to take care of her mental health.
PRIDE reached out for comment but did not hear back at the time of publication.
Morgan Spector, who stars in the HBO hit drama The Gilded Age, reviewed some top-bottom confusion in his most recent interview with GQ.
During the conversation, he was asked about a comment he made during aLos Angeles Times Drama Talk roundtable last year, where he said, "I'm very much creatively a bottom. Tell me what to do and just let me obey." His comment made the rounds on the gay side of social media, thanks to the culture connoisseur Evan Ross Katz, who posted about it on his Instagram account.
In his interview with GQ Hype, Spector was given the space to remind people that he is straight (he's been married to Rebecca Hall since 2015) and explain what he meant by being a "bottom," creatively. “I just made a joke, that’s really what it is!" he told the magazine. “I like being able to use my intuition and my intelligence to plug into somebody else’s ideas, learn their language, learn their way of communicating, figure out what the thing is that they’re trying to make, and then deliver that.”
The star, who is affectionately known as "Railroad Daddy," thanks to his Gilded Age character being a railroad tycoon, went on to crack a joke and said, "I guess it’s more of being a service top, creatively, than being a bottom.”
The interviewer also brought up the accusations of queerbaiting that Spector faced after his original comments were made last year. Spector gracefully answered the question and asked, "Straight guys can’t bottom? I mean, people can play with dominance and submission in heterosexual relationships."
He goes on to say, "We’re living in a moment now where we’re exploding ideas of gender. We deconstruct, these things are not fixed…. It’s theater, baby. We’re all playing in the same sandbox in a certain way.”
Katz posted his GQ interview comments on his Instagram and the gays are still thirsting over him. "These words coming from daddy made me feel stuff," one person commented. Another person suggested that Carrie Coon's character, who is married to Spector's character, is "def a top."
