Oscar Buzz for Director Kathryn Bigelow After Making DGA History

Kathryn Bigelow could be the first woman in history to win the coveted Oscar for directing. As most of us watched Pink get lifted above the Grammy stage and soaked in water, Bigelow won the DGA award for best direction in The Hurt Locker. Bigelow will battle it out with ex-husband and Avatar director James Cameron at the Academy Awards March 7.

Kathryn Bigelow could be the first woman in history to win the coveted Oscar for directing, reports the New York Daily News.

As most of us watched in awe as Pink get lifted above the Grammy stage and soaked in water over the weekend, Bigelow was busy making history at a ceremony in Los Angeles by becoming the first-ever female winner of the Directors' Guild of America (DGA) award for best direction in a feature film for The Hurt Locker.

"This is the most incredible moment of my life," said Bi gelow at the ceremony.

In the DGA's 62-year-existence no female director has ever won this award. And she could be headed for the Academy Award this year, as nearly every DGA win in this category results in the same achievement at the Oscars. Only six DGA winners have not gone on the take the Oscar.

In the Academy's 82-year history, only three women have been nominated in the best director's category: none have won.

Bigelow will battle it out with ex-husband and  Avatar director James Cameron on Oscar night March 7.

This is no small accomplishment as Bigelow's movie took in just $12 million at the box office, while Cameron's so far made $2 billion worldwide and is the highest-grossing film of all time.
