Getting divorced can now be turned into high-engagement Instagram content, too!

Gay marriage can end in gay divorce, duh!

With one million followers on Instagram, Pelayo Díaz Zapico (@pelayodiaz) recently went viral for announcing his divorce from Andy McDougall (@andymcdougall) in a pretty unusual way. The former couple threw a divorce party together and shared pictures on Instagram posing together, eating some cake, and hanging out with friends.

“Just got divorced! Celebrating with friends that this morning [McDougall] and I have officially signed for divorce,” Zapico wrote in an Instagram post. “Two years ago, when we spoke and came to the conclusion that love was over, I remember that we lay in tears. It was so sad for us to become strangers and forget so many adventures, trips, and craziness together.”

He continued, “So we looked each other in the eyes and we both made a promise: take care of each other and respect each other, and that it didn’t end there. Today, two years later, we’ve proven that another kind of disruption is possible. I’m so proud of us for keeping that energy alive that united us and that inspired so many people back in the day.”

“It’s true that [a relationship is] a daily job and neither of us take for granted the good relationship we keep. But I think it’s very positive to show that relationships can also end in another way – from love,” Zapico added. “I love to keep sharing things with you, Andy. That we call each other at any time. That my phone is bursting with memes and things that keep making us funny. That we improvise going for coffee, take pictures, go to dinner at each other’s house [and] continue going out to the park together. (…) All of these may seem like small things, but they mean a lot to me and I wanted to publicly say thank you.”

Clearly, Zapico and McDougall’s divorce party was a huge blast not only for the ex-husbands but also for their friends. While it’s unusual to see a former couple throwing a party to celebrate their divorce, Zapico did make a good point that our perspectives can evolve over time, and some relationships end for the betterment of everyone involved.

With so much “gay couple content” shared all over social media, it’s also funny and interesting that even a couple’s divorce era can now enter the Insta-gay content pipeline. Let’s be real: most gay breakups that we’ve gotten to witness online have been rather messy, so it’s definitely refreshing to see an ex-couple like Zapico and McDougall taking the “conscious uncoupling” approach coined by Gwyneth Paltrow during her divorce with Coldplay singer Chris Martin.
