8 Future 'X-Men' Projects Queer Fans Can't Wait to See
While none of these projects are currently known to focus specifically on gender identity or sexuality, in a way, the X-Men are all queer. The whole idea of the iconic, superhero franchise is about othering (something LGBT fans know about all too well), and whether it was intended or not, the X-Men have become one of the most well known proxies for minorities in modern fiction. While it may not have originally been the plan, Marvel has embraced this connection, creating a rich and diverse world of mutants who are all struggling to be accepted.
In this world of misfits, there are so many stories to be told. Here are some of the ones we're dying to see, coming to a screen near you soon!
Legion
This is far from your typical superhero show. This mind-bending, psychological drama follows David, a man who has spent most of his life being shifted from one mental health facility to another due to his severe schizophrenia. In a new facility, he begins to realize that mental illness may not be the only thing going on in him. The show is a period piece, set when the government is just starting to realize the reality of mutants. A show focusing so heavily on mental health can be a dangerous area to blunder into, but the show explores the angle in a compelling way, using fantastical elements to reflect back on a the complicated nature of the human mind.
Deadpool 2
The first Deadpool movie was pretty much perfect, and the marketing for its sequel has already been more perfect than perfect, so there isn’t a lot of worry that Deadpool 2 isn’t going to nail it. Starring Ryan Reynolds once again as the Merc with a Mouth, this movie also introduces Josh Brolin as Cable, the son of Scott Summers (aka Cyclops), sent to the past from a broken future to kill some kid. Deadpool obviously can’t let that stand.
This isn’t the first time the X-Men universe has dipped into time travel, a reoccurring theme in the comics, and it opens up a whole new direction for the universe to go in.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
X-Men: Apocalypse was...a little rough. But the bright spot was the new cast playing familiar characters, including Sophie Turner’s great turn at Jean Grey, a character who has been a little worn thin. The Dark Phoenix storyline was already explored in 2006's X-Men: Last Stand and didn’t go over too well. It’s a tricky story to handle: incredibly epic, but also incredibly overdone. With a new set of actors, and a new team behind the wheel, hopefully they will nail this classic story.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is planned to hit theaters in February 2019!
Kitty Pryde
Not a lot is known about this solo flick. It’s been greenlit and the talented Brian Michael Bendis will be writing the script for it, possibly based on an issue of X-Men where Kitty is alone in the X-Mansion over the holidays when the school is attacked.
Kitty has been a staple secondary character in the X-Men movies for quite awhile, played perfectly by Ellen Page. She was one of the few actors to carry over from the first trilogy to the second, but it’s unknown right now if she will star. The premise is an interesting one, and will need a strong actress to carry it, which Page can clearly carry. Perhaps we’ll finally get an official Lockheed, too!
Hopefully we’ll be getting more information soon.
The Gifted
The Gifted goes the opposite direction of many X-Men movies, starting with a normal family having to push themselves into the world of the mutants. Amy Acker and Stephen Moyer play parents of a regular, red-blooded American family who are thrown into the underground world of Mutants when they learn their children have abilities and go on the run to protect them.
The series takes place in the same universe of the X-Men movies, but does not directly tie in, although both feature teleporting mutant Blink as well as Lorna, a mutant tied deeply to Magneto.
The Gifted airs on FOX, and was just renewed for its second season!
Gambit
This solo X-Men movie has already had a crazy ride. and it hasn’t even really gotten started yet!
While Gambit popped up in a Wolverine spin-off, the character (played by Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch)...didn’t do as well as hoped. Ryan Reynold’s managed to salvage Deadpool from the film, Kitsch couldn’t jump start Gambit. Which is when the hunky Channing Tatum stepped in. Tatum is from New Orleans, drips charm, and has proven his acting chops here in there in movies such as Hail, Caeser! and Foxcatcher.
However, the movie has run into lots of issues. Pushed back years, its gone through so many directors and writers that it’s starting to become a joke. If done right, this movie could start a whole new franchise within a franchise like Wolverine’s movies—but that’s looking less likely the longer production goes on.
Hopefully we’ll get to see Channing Tatum’s Gambit in July 2019. (If it doesn’t get pushed back again...)
The New Mutants
It’s often said that a lot of the success of the Marvel movies is that they don’t all stick to the label of being just superhero/action movies, and the upcoming The New Mutants takes this and runs with it. This flick is exploring the horror behind the comics, as it follows a group of young mutants trapped in a secret testing facility, trying to escape with their lives.
The movie features lots of familiar faces, both characters and actors. Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik (the little sister of Deadpool’s Colassus, though it is unclear if that will be addressed). Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie, aka Cannonball, Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf) as Roberto da Costa, aka Sunspot, and Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar, aka Mirage.
X-Force
Very little is known about this project. The original plans were all put on the back burner when the solo Deadpool flick took off, stealing a little too much of the thunder.
But with the success of the original Deadpool, and Deadpool 2 looking to take off the same, a possible X-Force movie has gotten more attention. The studio plans to follow up DP2 with both a third solo sequel and an X-Force movie. We’ve got a good handful of X-Forcers already lined up, so it’ll be exciting to see who else pop in!
