7 Self-Care Tips for When You're Feeling Down
Everyone has off days. Sometimes there’s a reason. Other times, the blues don’t always need an excuse to ruin your day. LGBT people are 1.5 to 2.5 times more prone to depression and anxiety that the straight population. Such stats are a bummer, but it’s also a relief to know that you’re not alone and that you’re also not crazy for going through tough times or bad days.
Considering that society isn’t always the kindest to those who don’t fit the heteronormative model, it’s no wonder that the queer community has it harder when it comes to mental health. Just remember that it’s not only okay, but crucial, to treat your mental health like you would any other ailment, such as a sprained ankle or the flu. Take care of yourself. Here are seven self-care tips for when you’re feeling down (be it a bad day after a breakup or depression). And of course, reach out to a mental health professional if any of your symptoms are interfering with everyday life!
1. Take a day off from work
Sometimes our bodies and brains tell us to push through in today’s work hard, play hard, fast-paced environment. It’s okay to take mental health care days every now and then. If you wake up feeling overwhelmed, and like you just can’t go into work, maybe you need a day of enjoying snacks, sleeping, and watching TV. You’ll be more productive in the long run if you allow yourself such breaks.
2. Call a friend
Sometimes we need reminders that we have people who care about us, and sometimes we need to cash in on that love and ask for some attention. While a friend or partner shouldn’t be a substitute for professional help, don’t be afraid to reach out to a loved one when you’re feeling blue. That’s what friends are for!
3. Hit the gym
I know, I know. Going to the gym when you feel like nothing matters seems impossible. But put on a silly TV show on your phone, and just sit on a stationary bike and watch it while you get a little cardio in. Exercise relieves endorphins, which helps boost mood. You know that high you get after a really hard work out? Once you get yourself off the couch, and onto the cardio machine, just even ten minutes can lift your spirits.
4. Eat and drink something
Sometimes when we’re feeling down we lose our appetites. That’s normal. However, our body needs calories to function. Skipping meals can leave you light-headed, out of it, and can increase stress and depression. So, while feeling down can lower appetite, ironically, not eating can make you feel even worse. Try a healthy juice/smoothie, or treat yourself to a milkshake.
5. Hit the spa
Sometimes we need some professional self-care (and I’m not just talking about the therapist). Release tension through a massage, steam room, or enjoy a facial. No, that’s not a sex joke (but hey, there’s no reason not to enjoy both!).
6. Masturbate
Don’t feel like seeing anyone? That’s totally fine, but how about your hand? Orgasms release oxytocin, which is a mood-booster, so think of masturbation like an easily accessible antidepressant that doesn’t require a trip to the pharmacy.
7. Sleep
When we’re sleep deprived, we’re more at risk for anxiety and depression. Anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns can also keep us up at night, so lack of sleep can become a chicken or egg scenario. If you’re feeling down, cranky, or anxious, try masturbating and then getting a good night’s rest or taking a nap. Seriously, you may feel like a whole new person when you wake up. Our bodies aren’t machines, they require fuel (food) and rest to work, so before you start wondering what’s wrong if you’re feeling down, ask yourself if you’re getting enough sleep.
