Half-Female, Half-Male Butterfly ‘Gynandromorph’ Born in London Museum

The incredibly rare butterfly shocked scientists at the London Natural History Museum when it emerged from a cocoon. Only 0.01 percent of insects have dual sex traits like this.

Half-female and half-male, an incredibly rare butterfly shocked scientists at the London Natural History Museum when it emerged from a cocoon.

The unique mormon butterfly is split down the middle, with the male side’s wings showing darker and the female side more colorful. The reproductive organs were "fused down the middle," the Guardian reported.

The androgynous butterfly emerged two weeks ago, and the staff of the Sensational Butterflies exhibit report the unusual insect has one antenna longer than the other, too.

Huffington Post notes, “Spectators will have to rush to catch a glimpse, because the butterfly's lifespan is only a month. Known as gynandromorphs, only 0.01 percent of insects have dual sex traits like this.”
