Mexican-American actress Daniella Pineda plays paleo-veterinarian Dr. Zia Rodriguez in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom film.
In a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, she revealed that her character was initially intended to be gay, but a scene which would have revealed her sexuality was cut because the film was "too long."
This seems to be a recurring theme among action blockbusters: a scene was filmed revealing the character's sexual identity, but it is then left on the cutting room floor.
Last year, there was a scene in Thor: Ragnarok where Tessa Thompson’s character, bisexual superhero Valkyrie, showed a woman walking out of her bedroom. Rolling Stone reported that director Taika Waititi eventually cut the scene because "it distracted from the scene’s vital exposition," which feels like a flimsy excuse at best.
In the latest installment of Jurassic World, Pineda describes the scene in question, which occurs towards the beginning of the film. Zia is sitting with her co-star Owen (Chris Pratt), and the two are getting to know one another prior to the epic adventure that’s about to ensue.
Pineda then explains, "I look at Chris [Pratt] and I’m like: 'Yeah, square jaw, good bone structure, tall, muscles, I don’t date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I’d do it.'"
She added, "I love that I’m looking at Chris Pratt, the hottest guy in the world, and I’m like, 'It would gross me out, but I guess I would do it!' It was also cool, because it was a little insight into my character. But they cut it."
