Miley Cyrus Interviews Her Idol Joan Jett

That's why I have always looked up [to] you," Cyrus tells her idol, Joan Jett. "I love that you never apologized for who you were. It's something I had to learn. ... I'm sick of feeling as if I owe someone an apology for being who I am."

Miley Cyrus has been making a lot of positive headlines lately for her outspoken support for LGBT and marriage equality.

Now, the 18-year-old performer has put her nerves aside to interview her idol, rock legend Joan Jett, for the “Heroes” September issue of V Magazine.

"People see me as this perfect Disney star, and the moment I put out a record that says 'I'm not 11 years old anymore,' people look down on me," Cyrus says in the piece. "That's why I have always looked up [to] you. When you came out people were shocked that there was a chick that wanted to rock as hard as the guys."

In the interview, Jett laments the immense pressure and scrutiny placed on young stars today, saying it was much easier for her, even at the height of The Runaways fame.

"I was thinking to myself ... how difficult it must be to lead your life as a teenager with the paparazzi and the amount of press you're surrounded by," Jett says. "I thought to myself, 'Wow that was kind of a blessing that we didn't have that stuff when I was growing up in The Runaways.' "

Cyrus is such a huge Joan Jett fan, she even sang her classic anthem “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” for her Hannah Montana audition.

Cyrus says her most powerful life lesson from Jett is this:

"I love that you never apologized for who you were. It's something I had to learn. ... I'm sick of feeling as if I owe someone an apology for being who I am."
