Minnesota Church Installs Lesbian Pastor

A Presbyterian church in Minnesota has installed a lesbian as its new pastor.

Fox 47 reports that Laurene Lafontaine assumed her position, which was initially approved on July 9, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Rochester last Sunday.

Ordained in 1987, the religious leader is an LGBT activist that has served as a minister for roughly 26 years, after earning her Masters of Divinity from the Princeton Theological Seminary.

In the past, Lafontaine has been a leader of projects that combine activism and faith. She founded the AIDS/HIV Interfaith Network of Colorado in 1991, where she served as executive director. She also directed the Voices of Faith program for Equality Colorado.

“Laurene has many important qualities to help us grow as a congregation,” reads a statement on the church’s website. “She took over a small struggling church made up of older members who literally had the mindset that they were going out of business and after a year, the congregation began to grow and operate with a surplus.”
