Too Faced co-founder Jerrod Blandino has fired his sister, who goes by Dani California on Instagram, after transphobic comments she made in regards to popular makeup YouTuber NikkieTutorials coming out as trans.
Nikkie posted a lengthy video to her channel earlier on this week explaining that she transitioned when she was a teenager, and was only making this private information public because someone had threatened to out her to the media.
After Nikkie’s video, Dani changed her Instagram bio to read: “Trangender huh? That’s not the only thing she’s been LYING about,” in an obvious attack on the makeup influencer.
As Pride’s editor-in-chief, Raffy Ermac, pointed out, this comment furthers the harmful idea that being trans and presenting as your true gender in some way means that you’re lying about your identity.
Dani later changed her bio to say “Let’s be clear, I love trans people & dislike anyone who lies to hurt others!” in a completely useless attempt to save face. Her original hurtful comments were already known, and the many, many fans who support NikkieTutorials were quick to call for a boycott of Too Faced.
While it’s unclear exactly what role Dani played in the company, Blandino has reportedly now severed professional ties with her in response to her actions.
“Let it be known that I am truly shocked and disgusted to my core at her recent actions,” he said in a statement released to Too Faced’s Twitter. “I do not tolerate this behavior and she is no longer an employee of Too Faced.”
He continued: "I would like to say how proud I am of Nikkie Tutorials, and how inspired I am for her strength and sharing her beautiful truth with the world."
Meanwhile, Dani has changed her Instagram to private and set the bio to: "Well God bless your sweet hearts."
