Dame Dolly Parton’s Broadway baby
9 to 5 is getting its pink slip on -- ironically -- Labor Day weekend, according to the
New York Post. The musical, based on the smash hit 1981 film of the same name and starred Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, just couldn’t find it’s audience, despite name recognition since Parton penned the score. It will clock in for the last time on Labor Day weekend.
Critics panned the musical starring Alison Janney, Megan Hilty and Stephanie J. Block, despite their strong turns in their roles.
Dolly herself turned up for the Tony Awards in June to belt out a few bars of the familiar title song, before passing the mic off to the ensemble cast.
The beloved songstress nabbed a Tony nomination for her score but the nominating committee snubbed the show in the Best Musical category, opting to give a nod to Rock of Ages, a big hair rock musical redux.
And just because one can never have too much Dolly, here’s her video for "Backwoods Barbie," the title song from her last release, which was repurposed and belted on stage by
Wicked alumna, Megan Hilty.
