Lady Gaga is headed to the White House!
The “Bad Romance” singer is among a group of artists who have been appointed to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, which will advise President Joe Biden on relevant cultural issues.
The committee was originally founded in 1982, but was disbanded in 2017 after every member resigned in response to then-President Donald Trump’s defense of white supremacists in Charlottesville (better known as the time he insisted there were “very fine people on both sides” of a conflict that included actual neo-Nazis).
Now, the committee will return with a number of familiar names, including Shonda Rhimes, George Clooney, Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington, Marta Kauffman, and Jon Batiste, according to a statement shared by the White House on Thursday. They will be joined by “heads of key federal agencies with a role in culture,” and producer Bruce Cohen and Lady Gaga will serve as co-chairs of the committee.
“PCAH advises the President and the heads of U.S. cultural agencies on policy, philanthropic and private sector engagement, and other efforts to enhance federal support for the arts, humanities, and museum and library services,” the White House said.
“The PCAH will also engage the nation’s artists, humanities scholars, and cultural heritage practitioners to promote excellence in the arts, humanities, and museum and library services and demonstrate their relevance to the country’s health, economy, equity, and civic life.”
