Connecticut governor Dan Malloy signed HB 6599 into law Tuesday, making his state the 15th to protect transgender people from discrimination.

The far-reaching legislation goes into effect on October 1, 2011; it will protect transgender people in matters of employment, housing, public accommodations, credit and all other laws under the jurisdiction of the state’s Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. Republican politicians unsuccessfully attempted to exempt restrooms, locker rooms and boardinghouses from the law.
